Born March 18, 1885, in Huntsville, Ontario, Winnifred Trainor remains a mystery surrounding the life of Tom Thomson. Was she the artist’s fiancee? Were they to be wed shortly after Thomson disappeared on Canoe Lake in 1917? Or were they simply friends — a familiar face in Algonquin Park who invited the artist into her home whenever he was passing through Huntsville?
Winnifred Trainor never married. She died August 12, 1962, aged 77.
She is buried in All Saints Anglican Cemetery, on the outskirts of Huntsville.
Located across the street from the Huntsville Public Library, 3 Minerva Street was the home of Winnifred Trainor. It was demolished long ago, replaced with a non-descript red brick building. On one of its exterior walls is a print of a lone canoe, painted by Tom Thomson.
Shortly before her death, Winnifred was asked about her relationship with Thomson. Her response was:
“Tom Thomson was the man that made me happy, then vanished. If I saw you I could say things that I will never write.”
